Author: The StrokeEd Collaboration
Presented: 28th October 2025
Duration: 1hr 4m
Presenter:
Professor Nele Demeyere
Professor Nele Demeyere heads the Translational Neuropsychology research group at the University of Oxford. The lab’s research interests are at the interface of cognitive neuropsychology and clinical practice in stroke. Prof Demeyere started the research group as an Associate Professor in 2016, through a Stroke Association funded lectureship. Prof Demeyere currently holds an NIHR advanced fellowship on developing a post-stroke cognitive carepathway intervention.
Description: Nele discusses research with the Oxford Cognitive screen, including insights on the why, what, when and how of domain-specific cognitive screening in stroke post stroke. Guided by best practice clinical guidelines, she suggests a potential stepped framework for cognitive screening post stroke evaluating both focal and generalised cognitive changes linked to focal stoke injury against a backdrop of overall brain health, discussing differing cognitive trajectories.
Learning outcomes
After attending this lecture, the learner should be able to:
- contrast domain-specific and domain-general cognitive changes after stroke
- understand how to screen for post stroke cognitive impairments
- understand different post-stroke cognitive trajectories over time: recovery – stability – decline
