Evidence-based lower limb retraining after stroke – a 3-day workshop.

Dates: 22nd, 23rd & 24th May 2026

Target audience – The workshop will be of interest to physiotherapists from hospital and community based settings who teach adults following stroke and acquired brain injury, as well as occupational therapists and exercise physiologists. The workshop focuses on retraining of lower limb skills including sitting, standing up, standing balance and walking. No pre-requisites.

Learning Outcomes: After attending this workshop, participants should be able to:

1. Identify the key aspects of a being an evidence based clinician

2. Describe the biomechanics of sitting and standing, standing-up and walking

3. Demonstrate the ability to analyse movement problems in these skills, taking into account neural, biomechanical, musculoskeletal and environmental factors

4. Demonstrate the ability to plan and implement appropriate training strategies for the analysed movement problems

5. Evaluate the effectiveness of the chosen training strategies and modify these strategies in response to changes in the stroke survivor’s performance

6. Evaluate and modify their own and others’ teaching skills to optimise people’s motor skill acquisition

Pre-reading & homework: Therapists are asked to start preparing 2-4 weeks before the event. Allow several hours for the homework particularly if English is not your primary language. The pre-work includes watching two recorded lectures and reading two journal articles.
