Description:

Dan Eaves presented a guest lecture in 2024 about delivery of mental practice. StrokeEd have invited Dan back to share his recent applied research on the topic.

Despite strong evidence and consistent recommendations across many international guidelines, mental practice remains underused in upper limb stroke rehabilitation. One reason is that the guidance on how to implement mental practice in clinical settings is scant, creating a global gap in resources for stroke rehabilitation teams. The limited descriptions of how to implement mental practice causes confusion among clinicians about what mental practice is and how it benefits patients.

To realise the full potential of mental practice in upper limb stroke rehabilitation, targeted education, standardised protocols, and practical resources must address current implementation barriers so that this proven, low-cost intervention can become routine clinical practice.
